American Legion Palo Alto Post 375 discovered that the Memorial Flagpole at the Veterans Memorial Building had been enclosed in a plywood box. As the box remained in place unexplained, Post 375 inquired to discover that the property owner Stanford University had erected the box after the flagpole's memorial base had been damaged.
In response, Post 375 recommended that Stanford officials submit the damage and treatment of the flagpole to the Historic Resources Board (HRB) for review. Post 375 presented the case for the Memorial Flagpole's full restoration at the April 13th HRB Study Session on the matter.
The sense of the Study Session was that Post 375 should work with Stanford University o a plan to restore the Memorial Flagpole to its original appearance, which will be presented to Palo Alto for formal approval.
